Discussion: Guy Winch's advice

Your exam question asks you to discuss the advice on overcoming heartbreak that Guy Winch presents in his TED Talk “How to fix a broken heart”. In your discussion, it is recommended that you present arguments both for and against the advice that Winch has to offer.

In his talk, Winch presents the idea that one of the most important ways of coping with heartbreak and resisting the way our brains can sabotage us into refusing to let go is to rely on reason. He explains that it is important to avoid idealizing one’s former partner and relationship, which often tends to happen after a breakup. To do this, he advises creating a list of the negative aspects of the relationship or the ex, and using it as a reminder whenever people feel themselves starting to get nostalgic. This piece of advice seems very practical and useful, as it is not hard to implement and could be an effective way to rationalize heartbreak, which is driven by emotions.
