Style of language

The language used in Guy Winch’s TED Talk “How to fix a broken heart” is generally informal and conversational, although he sometimes also uses more formal, psychological terms. The casual and informal way Winch addresses his audience helps to keep them engaged and makes it seem as though he is telling a story to a group of people he knows. At the same time, the use the formal style makes him appear knowledgeable on the subject and therefore capable of discussing it in a serious manner.

 Winchrepeatedly uses the personal pronoun “you” as a way to engage the audience and express the idea that most people likely experience heartbreak at one point or another throughout their lives.

The talk includes a lot of figurative language such as metaphors. For example, when talking about Kathy’s breakup, Winch says that “Kathy was shattered. Her heart was truly broken”. The use of such metaphors helps to express the intense emotional pain Kathy was going through.
