Short summary

In the novel Holes by Louis Sachar, young Stanley Yelnats and his entire family have been under a heavy curse for generations. From the day Stanley’s great-great-grandfather broke a promise to his old friend Madame Zeroni, happiness just won't come for their family. Stanley's great-grandfather made a fortune on the stock market, but it was stolen from him by the famous outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow before he could pass it on.
