The dialogue between Jane Pauley and Hillary Clinton

Part of your exam question asks you to focus on the dialogue between Jane Pauley and Hillary Clinton in the interview “Hillary Clinton Speaks” in your analysis of the text.

The dialogue between the two initially comes across as an informal friendly conversation:

Jane Pauley: So I’m wondering, how are you?
Hillary Clinton: I think I am good. (ll. 7-8)

Pauley’s opening question aims to make Clinton feel more comfortable talking about a sensitive topic – losing the presidential elections – and suggests that Pauley is sympathetic towards Clinton.

Throughout the dialogue, there is a sense of intimacy that is developing between the two speakers. This is first suggested by the fact that Clinton shares personal details about her reaction to losing the elections:

Off I went, into a frenzy of closet cleaning, and long walks in the woods, playing with my dogs, and, yoga, alternate nostril breathing, which I highly recommend, tryin’ to calm myself down. And – you know, my share of Chardonnay. (ll. 31-33)
