Introduction

The interview “Hillary Clinton Speaks” was conducted by Jane Pauley, who can be considered the main sender of the text. However, given that the material is an interview in which Hillary Clinton is asked about her views and opinions on losing the 2016 elections, we can consider Clinton an additional sender.

Jane Pauley

Jane Pauley is a well-known TV host in the US with an extensive background in TV. She hosts the CBS Sunday Morning show. She used to be a correspondent and co-anchor for NBC’s Today and also has a weekly magazine series called Dateline. As she also received several awards and recognitions for her journalistic work, Pauley comes across as a credible sender.

In the interview, Pauley comes across as informed about the topic through her comments and the additional information she provides: “Jane Pauley: Hillary Rodham Clinton has spent the last 10 months trying to figure out why she isn’t President of the United States.”(ll. 10-11)

While talking with Hillary Clinton, first she is polite, friendly, and understanding: “Jane Pauley: So I’m wondering, how are you?” (l. 6); “Jane Pauley: So: What did happen? Hillary Clinton was supposed to make history as the first woman president of the United States” (ll. 59-60). In this way, she creates a comfortable environment for Clinton, something expected of TV hosts, while also suggesting sympathy with Clinton’s ideas. At times, she also lets Clinton finish sentences however she wants: “Jane Pauley: Well, defeated candidates don’t necessarily show up, but…” (l. 38). This suggest that she wants to let Clinton presents her own views and arguments.
