Location: A room in the castle

Characters: King Claudius, Queen Gertrude, Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
 

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern confess to Claudius that they have not yet discovered the cause of Hamlet’s insane behavior. Claudius and Polonius then hide to eavesdrop on an arranged meeting between Ophelia and Hamlet. They want to find out if he is really suffering the consequences of unrequited love.

Before Hamlet meets Ophelia, he is engaged in his famous “to be or not to be” soliloquy. Here, he reflects on the burden of earthly life, but also on the fear of ending it. When Ophelia speaks to him in a friendly manner, he responds with confused and insulting statements. He seems to have no memories of a happy past with her, and he repeatedly urges her to enter a convent to escape the evil world.
