Laertes
Laertes is too impulsive
An important character in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is Laertes. He is Polonius’ son and Ophelia’s brother.
When Laertes hears that his father has been murdered, he quickly returns to Denmark from his studies in Paris. Although he cannot know the true identity of the murderer, he instantly blames King Claudius for his father’s death and is able to gather an army around him. He is so charismatic and determined that the Danish people immediately want to proclaim him their new king (4.5.116-117). Laertes, however, only wants to avenge his father.
Without hesitation, he invades Elsinore Castle and demands accountability from King Claudius for Polonius’ death: “To this point I stand, That both the worlds I give to negligence, Let come what comes; only I’ll be revenged Most thoroughly for my father.” (4.5.138-141).
