Reception and criticism

The film Gran Torino directed by Clint Eastwood came out in 2008. Upon its release, the film was generally well received by audiences and was given positive reviews. Some critics liked the way the film highlighted Eastwood’s transition from a typical action hero into a more nuanced character in his old age. Moreover, many liked the American themes and issues explored in the film and thought sensitive topics were well handled. The decision to cast Hmong actors to play Hmong roles was also praised, as Hollywood often does not offer actors from a minority background the opportunity to represent characters from the same background as them. The film was nominated for multiple awards and the original song Gran Torino included in the movie’s soundtrack was also nominated for a Golden Globe.
