Smokie and Spider

In Clint Eastwood’s 2008 movie Gran Torino, Smokie and Spider are two important members of the Hmong gang. Though the Hmong gang has multiple members, only Smokie, the leader, and Spider, Thao’s cousin, stand out as individuals. 

The gang shows what happens to Hmong teenagers who lack guidance and opportunities to make an honest life for themselves in America. In this way, Spider and Smokie become foils for Thao. As Thao was nearly recruited into the gang, Spider and Smokie serve to show what would have likely become of Thao if it had not been for Walt’s influence.
