Narrator and point of view

The events described in the short story “Eveline” by James Joyce are told by a third-person narrator, who is outside the story. 

The narrator adopts Eveline’s perspective and presents her thoughts and feelings through free indirect speech, like in the following example: “Ernest had been her favourite but she liked Harry too. Her father was becoming old lately, she noticed; he would miss her. Sometimes he could be very nice”. Since these are Eveline’s opinions about her father, we could say the narrator is subjective. 

The free indirect speech, along with Eveline’s stream of consciousness, present details that only Eveline might know: 

The man out of the last house passed on his way home; she heard his footsteps clacking along the concrete pavement and afterwards crunching on the...
