Analysis

The analysis of the short story “Eveline” by James Joyce shows that the narrative has a chronological structure. The narrative relies on flashbacks, which give readers more information about the main character.

The main character of the short story is Eveline, a 19-year-old Irish girl. The story follows her inner conflict, as she struggles to choose between duty to her family and following the man she loves.

The story’s physical setting is Dublin, Ireland. Part of the events takes place in Eveline’s house, while other events take place at the Dublin docks. The social setting mainly looks at the different roles of men and women.

The events are presented by a third-person narrator, who adopts Eveline’s perspective. The readers get to know her thoughts and feelings through free indirect speech.

The language used in the short story is neutral. The sentence length and choice of words offer more insight into Eveline’s personality.
