Structure

The short story “Eveline” by James Joyce has a chronological structure, with the main events taking place over the course of a few hours.  

At the beginning, Eveline is presented in a state of passiveness, looking out the window: “She sat at the window watching the evening invade the avenue”. A flashback presents Eveline’s life as a child: “One time there used to be a field there in which they used to play every evening with other people's children”. A foreshadowing element suggests that Eveline’s father is a dominant part of her life, just like he was when she was little: 

Her father used often to hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick; but usually little Keogh used to keep nix and call out when he saw her father coming. Still they seemed to have been rather happy then....
