Knox Overstreet

Outer characterization

Knox Overstreet is a student at Welton Academy in the film Dead Poets Society (1989) directed by Peter Weir. He is part of Neil Perry’s close circle of friends and a member of the Dead Poets Society. Charlie’s nickname for him is Knoxious, which references the word “noxious” (harmful, poisonous, deadly).

Knox’s parents want him to be a lawyer, possibly following in the family’s tradition. Neil refers to him as “Mr. Future Lawyer” (00:09:09). When they meet, Mr. Danburry tells Knox “I know where you’re headed. Like father, like son, eh?” (00:19:26-00:19:29). His family appears to be well-off and possibly upper class. They know people from high society, such as the Danburrys, where Knox goes to attend a party. 

Knox meets Chris Noel, Chet Danburry’s girlfriend, at the Danburry’s party, and falls in love with her. 

Inner characterization

Knox appears to have a friendly, sociable personality. He hangs out with the other boys and makes occasional contributions. He is supposed to attend study group, like the rest of the boys, which he has to cancel because of his visit to the Danburrys.
