Summary

The excerpt from the novel Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas begins with a young man named Maverick Carter and his mother Faye driving to Evergreen Prison to visit Maverick’s father, Adonis, who is sentenced to forty to life. It is the day before Thanksgiving, and Maverick also has his baby son, Seven, with him. 
After Faye buys snacks from the vending machine and lays them out on the prison table, the inmates are let in. Maverick is emotional as he hugs his father, which is the only touch the prison allows between inmates and visitors. He introduces his baby son, Seven, to Adonis, who is also emotional to meet his grandson. 

Adonis tells his family that he has got a new kitchen job and that he is excited to try some new recipes for his fellow inmates. He asks about life at home, Maverick is initially afraid to confess but eventually tells his father that he is going to have another baby. 

Maverick’s parents start arguing and blaming each other for the situation. Adonis accuses his wife of not paying attention to their son, while Faye blames her husband for being absent in their lives.
