Structure

The excerpt from the novel Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas has a mostly chronological structure with some flashbacks interrupting the flow of the main narrative. The text focuses on an event that takes place over about half an hour – Maverick Carter visiting Adonis, his father, who is in prison. 

The beginning of the narrative presents the setting and introduces readers to the atmosphere of the town:

Evergreen Prison's in a small town that's only got a general store and a diner. Me and Ma went in that diner once. It was nothing but white people in there, and they gave us dirty looks soon as we walked in. We walked right back out.
