Characterization of Maverick Carter

Maverick Carter is the main character of the excerpt from the novel Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas. He is 17 years old and in school, which is revealed by his comments about still doing homework: “I could be staring at my homework to the point my eyebrows almost touch…”. Maverick has a baby son named Seven Maverick Carter, and reveals that he has another baby on the way with Lisa, who presumably was his girlfriend at one point: “ ‘Lisa, she pregnant’ ”. 

The narrative mainly focuses on Maverick looking up to his father. In the beginning, he is emotional at the thought of seeing his father.
