Physical setting

The events described in the excerpt from the novel Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas take place in Evergreen Prison. The prison is located in a mainly white town characterized by racism and prejudice against black people:

Evergreen Prison's in a small town that's only got a general store and a diner. Me and Ma went in that diner once. It was nothing but white people in there, and they gave us dirty looks soon as we walked in. We walked right back out.

The prejudiced atmosphere is further enhanced as Maverick and his mother drive toward the prison, which looks like it is surrounded by a planta...
