Modes of appeal

The main modes of appeal used by Terry Trespicio in the text “Stop Searching For Your Passion” are ethos and pathos. 

Ethos 

First of all, ethos is used when Trespicio refers to her own career successes. She appeals to ethos from the beginning of her speech, when she mentions a career at Martha Stewart:

The day I got laid off from my job at Martha Stewart I was relieved. (…) At the time I’d been also hosting a radio show for the Martha Stewart brand on SiriusXM and then not long after that got canceled too. (ll. 1-4)

Trespicio’s career at Martha Stewart, a famous American media and lifestyle company, makes her appear as a reliable speaker on the topic. 

Later on, Trespicio builds ethos when she talks about her extensive work experience: working as a magazine editor (l. 40), as a copywriter for a wig catalog (l. 41), and as a jewelry sales representativ...
