Style of language

Bill Clinton’s style of language in the “I Have Sinned” speech is mainly formal, as the issues he addresses are of important for his public reputation and career. 

When it comes to sentence structure, Clinton relies on a mix of different lengths of sentences. However, he mostly uses middle-length and long sentences, which mirror the complexity of the ideas he wants to share: “And if my repentance is genuine and sustained, and if I can maintain both a broken spirit and a strong heart, then good can come of this for our country as well as for me and my family”. In this example, the long sentence helps Clinton express the idea that, despite his past mistakes, he is still a worthy leader for America and a trustworthy figure in his family.
