Narrator and point of view

The story “Be Here Now” is told by a first-person narrator who is also the main character of the story. The narrator makes his presence felt after an introductory descriptive paragraph. His presence is signalled by the use of first-person pronouns (“me”. “I”): “Jenna hangs a painting on a wall. Jenna asks me if it's straight.” (l. 9) The narrator also reports his own speech: “Ow, fuck, I stubbed my toe, I say to Jenna…” (ll. 14-15)

Telling the story from the point of view of the narrator gives readers access to his thoughts: “I wonder how long her page will remain, how many months or years servers will keep our profiles, even when we're already somewhere else. I hope they outlast even memory” (ll. 144-145). This gives readers greater understanding of the narrator. Rhetorical questions like: “I wonder how fine is the line between loneliness and lus...
