Summary

In “A Good Night’s Sleep” by Brian McCabe, George Lockhart is an insomniac who cannot fall asleep because of a noise he can hear at his front door. He is often kept awake by the noises of the street, such as cars and the music from the nearby bar or Chinese restaurant. Sometimes he hears students coming back from parties, and he remembers his own time as a student.

Sometimes George cannot fall asleep because of his neighbours. An old man lives upstairs who always comes home drunk. The couple who live next door had a fight earlier that evening, and George wishes to fall asleep before they come home and start having sex.

However, George keeps hearing the noise at his front door. He wants to fall asleep soon because he is a teacher and has a class first thing in the morning. In the class, his students will discuss the problems of modern society, and he tries to come up with a relevant topic.
