This section highlights the main elements of our analysis of the short story “A Good Night’s Sleep” by Brian McCabe.

The story’s structure is linear, and it features narrative techniques such as foreshadowing and flashbacks. It tells the story of George, an insomniac who finds a homeless girl sleeping on his doormat.

The story contains two important characters: George Lockhart and the homeless girl. George’s neighbours are secondary characters.

The events take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, towards the end of the 20th century. The social setting explores an urban society which is faced with the problem of homelessness.

The events are described by a limited third-person narrator.

The story is told in a descriptive style, and the language also includes symbolic elements.
