Title

The title of the short story “A Good Night’s Sleep” by Brian McCabe has both a literal and a symbolic meaning.

In a literal sense, the title announces the theme of the story, and it refers to some lines from the text: “He could lock it now, go back to bed, forget her, get a good night’s sleep yet if he dropped off right away” (p. 151, ll. 16-18), “The luminous digits of the clock told him in any case that he’d never get a good night’s sleep now” (p. 154, ll. 13-14). “A good night’s sleep” is a commonly used phrase that refers to sleeping undisturbed all night. The title is intriguing, and the presence of the same phrase within the text signals that the line is meaningful, and it directs the reader’s attention to this idea in the story.
