Summary

“A Fable” by Robert Fox tells the story of a young man who takes the subway to Manhattan. He is nervous, but he loves the world because it is a fine day and he is starting his first job.

In the subway car, he notices a beautiful girl. The girl is with her mother – she notices the man looking at her and asks her mother what she should do. Her mother tells her that the man is in love with her and that she should answer him if he tries to talk to her.

The train reaches the business district, and many people get off. The young man finds a seat next to the girl and begins talking to her. He tells her that she is pretty, that he loves her, and that he wants to marry her. The girl’s mother tells her not to speak to him, but she asks if he has a job. He tells her ...
