Analysis

In this section, we will highlight the elements of our analysis of “A Fable” by Robert Fox.

The story follows a linear plot structure, while including narrative techniques like backstory and foreshadowing. The characters include the young man, as the main character, and the beautiful girl and her mother as secondary characters. Note that the narrator also mentions the other people in the subway car and the conductor who appears at the end.

The events take place in New York, during one Monday morning, on the subway line to Manhattan. The main character takes the subway and notices a beautiful girl, whom he immediately wants to marry. The social setting explores such themes as lack of identity and materialism.

The events are described by a limited third-person narrator, who gives brief insight into the main character’s state of mind and describes the events.

The story is told in a descriptive style, with plenty of imagery which helps readers understand more about the characters and the events. The language is simple; the story is told using a mix of narration and dialogue.
