Rhetorical devices

Tariq Ramadan uses a number of rhetorical devices in his article “You Can’t Go Home Again.” These devices help Ramadan argue his ideas better, while also involving the readers in the text.

Ramadan uses references at the end of his article. He mentions the increased need for Muslims and non-Muslims to cooperate and start trusting each other, even though he admits that this would be a difficult challenge “after Sept. 11” (p. 205, l. 53). Here, Ramadan refers to the terrorist attacks of 11th of September, 2001 on US soil. The attacks were carried out by the Islamic fundamentalist terrorist group Al-Qaeda and led to the invasion of Afghanistan by the United States and its allies.
