How Uber works

According to the article “What is Uber…”, in order to use Uber you need to give the app your bank account details as all payments are virtual: “Users must give their credit card details before using the app, and the fee is taken off the card at the end of a journey.” (ll. 18-19)

The article informs us that Uber drivers are not treated as employees, but as “freelance contractors” (l. 70). This means that the drivers have to pay for things such as car maintenance and petrol, and not the company. They also do not get healthcare or holiday pay as employees would. Furthermore, Uber drivers are not considered taxi drivers, but minicab drivers. This has implications on the costs of the service. Because drivers do not need to pay for the same taxi licences, Uber fares are cheaper.
