Analysis

In this section of the study guide, we present you the main elements of our analysis of the short story “Tobias”.

The structure of the short story is very simple and follows the consequences of unemployment for the main character, Tobias, and for his relationship with his girlfriend, Miriam. We will point out the traits of both Tobias and Miriam, the second active character in the short story.

The short story is set in Michigan, USA in an indefinite time setting. However, the story is more concerned with the social setting which focuses on the way unemployment affects individuals and couples.

The narrator uses Tobias’ perspective from time to time. He knows what Tobias is thinking and feeling, but this does not apply to Miriam as well.

The language of the short story is simple and minimalist. Repetitions and symbols add to the meanings of the story and help us better understand the characters.
