Forms of appeal
In the speech “Their Finest Hour”, Winston Churchill uses logos, pathos, and ethos. By using a combination of all three forms of appeal, Churchill creates a well-balanced speech meant to convince the audience of the next steps that need to be taken.
Logos
In his speech, Churchill appeals to logos to get his points across. He relies on the public’s logical thinking when he wants to explain some of the military choices made in France:
I must make it clear that, apart from the divisions training and organizing at home, only 12 divisions were equipped to fight upon a scale which justified their being sent abroad. And this was fully up to the number which the French had been led to expect would be available in France at the ninth month of the war. (ll. 95-100)
