Characters

The most important characters in “The Well of the World’s End” are the girl, who is the protagonist, and the stepmother and the frog, who are secondary characters. Note that the narrator also mentions an old woman who helps the girl find the well.

The girl is the protagonist of the fairy tale. She is not given a name or an age because her identity is not important. She is character that symbolises youth and female innocence.

The stepmother is a secondary character in the fairy tale. Like the girl, she is not given a name or age because she is a typical evil character, an antagonist whose only purpose is to hinder and torture the protagonist.

The frog is also a secondary character, but his role is more complex than the stepmother's. At first he plays the role of a helper, then he starts to resemble an antagonist because he forces the girls to do things she does not wish to do, but he is finally revealed to be an enchanted prince.
