Physical disability

The main theme of the short story “The Skirt” by Zoe Lambert concerns the negative impact physical disability can have on mental health and social relationships. Bethany is a former comedian who was paralyzed, and her current physical condition has a strong impact on her psychological well-being. Actions that other people take for granted and perform easily, such as getting dressed or taking a bus, are extremely difficult for her, and significantly impact her mental health. She constantly experiences negative emotions, such as anxiety, frustration, anger, or shame.

Moreover, Bethany’s relationship with other characters and society at large also deteriorates due to her condition. Although her family members are seemingly trying to help with her disability, their controlling attitudes and failures to empathize with her situation increase her mental instability, making her angry and frustrated.
