Style of writing

Overall, the style of writing used in the short story “The School of Life” by Lauren Keenan is relatively informal. However, it may be useful to distinguish between the language used in Marcus’s narration and the language used in the story’s dialogue.

The narration often uses relatively complex or academic words such as “surreptitious” (l. 17) or “autocratic, oligarchic, dictatorial sadist” (l. 25). These words highlight Marcus’s academic language and his feeling of superiority over others. The words used about Marcus’s father are grossly exaggerated; for example, his father is hardly a sadist for wanting his grown-up son to start earning his own money.
