Summary

“The River Underground” by Richard Tromans introduces readers to Husman, an illegal immigrant from Gambia, living and working in London. Husman came to London because he wants to make money so that he can return home after saving enough to build a house and have a decent life in Baku. His English is good because he used to talk with white tourists or other people who came to Baku and because he worked as an English teacher in his country. 

The white people he meets while still in Baku tell him different stories about life in England, about social benefits there and high salaries, but some also warn him that life in England is not as bright as it seems. He also overhears a conversation between two white people complaining about his people being thieves.
