The short story “The River Underground” by Richard Tromans is a contemporary piece of fiction that explores current issues related to immigration in England. Illegal immigration is presented from the perspective of a Gambian, who risks being arrested and deported because he wants to earn enough money to make a life for himself in Gambia. While Husman takes the issue of deportation lightly, in reality many illegal immigrants are at serious risk of being arrested, deported, and denied the right to return to the country.

In the story, Husman gets to England easily, but this is not the case for many immigrants nowadays. For some illegal immigrants, attempting to cross to another country might be deadly because they sometimes resort to methods like swimming large distances or being carried in shipping ...
