Analysis

An analysis of the short story “The Rain Missed My Face and Fell Straight to My Shoes” by Saeed Taji Farouky shows that the text has a chronological structure. At times, flashbacks are introduced to give readers more insight into the characters’ background.

The main character of the story is Samir, an illegal immigrant from Cairo who lives in London. The story follows Samir’s attempts to get money to send his mother’s body back to Cairo for her funeral. Most of the other characters are also immigrants.

The story’s physical setting is London, where various locations such as the cinema highlight the poor conditions of Samir and his friends live. The time setting is during the Iraq War.

The events are told by a first-person narrator, who is also the main character. His account of the events appears detached and unemotional until the ending where it becomes slightly more emotional.

The language used in the story is generally neutral. The story also contains a number of symbols.
