Narrator and point of view

The short story “The Rain Missed My Face and Fell Straight to My Shoes” by Saeed Taji Farouky is told by a first-person narrator, Samir, who is also the main character. The narrator presents the events as he experiences them, living as an illegal immigrant in London. 

The narrator presents some of the events in flashbacks, which broadens our understanding of him and his life. One example is this: 

He also managed to convince me, every Friday night, to take a few pounds from the till and go drinking with him. I never wanted to steal and I didn’t drink before I worked there but Youssef made me want to do all of that. (p. 32, ll. 2-5)
