Chris Gardner

Chris Gardner is the main character of the film The Pursuit of Happyness directed by Gabriele MuccinoHe is from Louisiana (00:17:23) and appears to have come from a broken home, as suggested by his statement that he only met his father when he was 28 (00:04:50-00:04:52). Because of this, he is very determined to support his family and to prove himself as worthy in their eyes: “I made up my mind as a young kid, that when I had children, my children were gonna know who their father was.” (00:04:53-00:04:59). This highlights Chris’ decision not to make the same mistakes as his father did and be a steady presence in the life of his son, who can rely on his father and look up to him. It also shows that his son, Christopher is the main reason behind his struggles to become rich and successful.

Chris is a good father. He takes care of Christopher, keeping him well-fed and clothed. Despite his busy lifestyle, he finds time for recreational activities with his son, such as playing basketball, taking him to the park or to football games. Chris is always receptive to Christopher’s wants and needs, even when Christopher does not express them. For instance, when he sees Christopher looking at a chocolate bar longingly, he buys it for him, even though he is almost broke. He also buys Christopher the basketball he knows he wants for his birthday.
