Characterization of the narrator

The unnamed narrator is the main character of the short story “The Premature Burial” by Edgar Allan Poe. He appears to come from an upper class, rich family. He has a family vault, which he redesigns and equips with various devices. 

The narrator appears to be an educated man. He has researched many cases on the topic which obsesses him. He has also read medical books and journals and is up to date with the latest scientific experiments. 

The narrator appears to be living in a state of constant anxiety caused by his extreme fear of being buried alive. This phobia comes to obsess him and causes him significant mental distress. Even when he takes steps to ensure that his vault is equipped with devices that would allow him to survive in case of a premature burial...
