Analysis

An analysis of the short story “The Premature Burial” by Edgar Allan Poe shows that it follows a linear, chronological plot structure. There are several elements of foreshadowing in the story.

The main character in the story is the unnamed narrator. The narrator’s actions are driven by his extreme fear, but he manages to overcome it and develops throughout the story.

The physical setting is a town in America, during the 19th century. The most important part of the setting is the boat where the narrator sleeps during his gunning expedition .

The story is told from the point of view of a first-person narrator. The narrator is observant but biased and at times leads the readers to the wrong conclusions.

The language is formal. The advanced, descriptive vocabulary and the elaborate manner of speech reflects the narrator’s worldview.
