Characters

The most important characters in “The Lunar Coast” by Megan McGrath are Lee and Alex, whom the narration follows.

The most important character-building relationship in the story is Alex and Lee’s friendship.

Lee grows up in a coastal village where he befriends Alex. Lee has grown to respect, fear, and connect with nature, and he is aware that it is not sustainable to deplete its resources.

Unlike Lee, Alex continues to view nature as a challenge, as something to be conquered and mastered. At the end, Lee’s reflections on Alex suggests he understands him and his need to be a fisherman, but that this is no longer Lee’s desire. This indicates the boys’ different development.

Next, we will outline the boys' outer and inner characterisation as presented in Megan McGrath's short story, “The Lunar Coast”.
