Characterization of the husband

The husband is the main character and narrator of Raymond Carver’s story “The Lie”. While the focus of the story is on the relationship between the husband and the wife, the husband’s perspective influences how readers see this relationship. 

It is clear from the way the husband speaks and the words he uses that he is an educated man, maybe even slightly pretentious. He seems to be passionate about Russian literature, especially Tolstoy. This can be seen from his use of old vocabulary when relating the story to the reader. He also thinks about Tolstoy’s philosophy of truth and tries to apply it in his daily life.
