Structure

The short story “The Lie” by Raymond Carver uses a linear plot structure, as the unnamed narrator strives to find out the truth about whether his wife had done something or not.

The story starts in medias res and the reader is thrown into the middle of the characters’ quarrel. 

‘It’s a lie,’ my wife said. ‘How could you believe such a thing? She’s jealous, that’s all.’ She tossed her head and kept staring at me. She hadn’t yet taken off her hat and coat. Her face was flushed from the accusation. ‘You believe me, don’t you? Surely you don’t believe...
