Summary

Raymond Carver’s “The Lie” presents a husband and wife who seem to be in conflict with each other. The story starts in the middle of their fight with the wife insisting that something is a lie. Their argument started from something that the husband heard from a common friend. The wife seems to become quite defensive, trying hard to convince her husband that the rumor is false. She appears quite desperate for him to believe her, insisting that she is telling the truth. The husband does not seem convinced and asks why a friend of theirs would lie about something like this.
