Characterization of Samir

Outer characterization

The main character in the short story “The Escape” by Qaisra Shahraz is Samir. He is a 73-year-old Pakistani man (p. 1, l. 3). He used to be married, but his wife, Sabiya, died recently, which has left him devastated. 

Samir emigrated to England in his youth and has been living in Manchester, England, for more than 40 years. When he was young, he worked for a while in the Darwen textile mill. (p. 7, l. 24). Afterwards, he bought an old factory and started his own knitwear business (pp. 7-8, ll. 44-1) and became a successful business owner. 

Samir is now retired (p. 8, l. 14) and lives in a “large five bedroom detached house” (p. 2, l. 18). He has a large family, consisting of at least two daughters and two sons, and several grandchildren (p. 2, ll. 32-35).
