Analysis

The analysis of the short story “The Escape” by Qaisra Shahraz shows that it follows a linear plot structure. The narrative contains several flashbacks which explain the main character’s life and give more information about his current thoughts and feelings. 

The main character is Samir, a Pakistani man who moved to England 40 years ago. After losing his wife, he is struggling to feel at home anywhere and tries to escape the feeling. he eventually develops as a character. 

The physical setting is England and Pakistan. Samir travels from one country to the other in search of a place where he feels at home. The time setting is during and immediately after the festival of Eid al-Fitr. 

The story is told from the point of view of an omniscient third-person narrator, who has access to the thoughts and feelings of several characters. However, we mostly experience things from Samir’s perspective.

The language is formal, reflecting the main character’s age and serious mood. The texts also includes Pakistani words, imagery, and symbols.
