War and death

The main theme of the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson is the theme of war. The poem highlights the bravery of the 600 soldiers who followed their orders, knowing they are going to die. 

The poem also focuses on the ranks that are present in the military by showing that soldiers know they are supposed to obey orders without question: 

Theirs not to make reply,

Theirs not to reason why,

Theirs but to do and die. (ll. 13-15)
