The language of the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson is typical of the Victorian era. The style of the poem is serious and slightly somber. The poem uses many words related to the military such as “brigade” (l.5), “guns” (l. 6), “soldier” (l. 11), “cannon” (l. 18), “sabres” (l. 27), and more. This highlights the main theme of the poem. 

The poem mainly uses verbs to describe the events of the battle:

Flashed all their sabres bare,

Flashed as they turned in air

Sabring the gunners there,

Charging an army…(ll. 27-30)

The use of verbs in nearly every line of the poem gives a fast pace to the action and adds to the tension.
