Overview of the Empire
The British Empire’s existence spanned across several centuries, from the 1600s to the 1940s. At its peak, the Empire became the largest one in history, a position that it maintained for about a century. This led to the British Empire becoming the dominant global power. Some of its most important colonies included the US, Canada, Australia, India, and South Africa.
The seeds of the Empire were formed when British explorers started to claim land in the name of the Queen towards the end of the 16th century. This would lead to the First British Empire, which was especially focused on North America, the Caribbean and India.
