The main themes of the short movie “Sweep” by Spencer Gillisare fatherhood and fear. It also indirectly explores the issue of racism.

Fatherhood

The short film features four male characters and tries to explore how men can bond and relate to each other. The plot of the movie suggests that one of the main ways through which men can bond is by sharing fatherhood stories.

Up until James and Jean start talking about their children, James is very reluctant to interact with the two black strangers who are also immigrants (suggested through their French accents). However, once they start talking about their children, James opens up and they all become playful, running through the landfill. However, the film suggests that their ability to open up might also be due to smoking marijuana.

The fact that the two men bond over the fact that they are both fathers is also suggested when the characters walk towards their van and Jean gives James advice about not trusting children because they are too young to sense risks and dangers (“The...
