The third question of your assignment asks you to discuss to what extent you should trust people you have just met, taking your starting point in the short film “Sweep” by Spencer Gillis. You should also use at least two of the following phrases: though, secondly, however, alternatively, firstly, since, yet, whereas.

The phrases you have to use in your discussion are linking phrases. Some of them help you introduce new points and arguments (firstly, secondly). Others help you introduce alternative arguments or explanations (alternatively), to show an exception (however, yet, though), to introduce a cause (since) or a comparison (whereas).  

In what follows, we will show you some examples of how you might use these phrases in your assignment, while also giving you inspiration for your discussion.

Firstly, the short film shows that people tend to mistrust others whom they have just met. This is indicated by the fact that James mistrusts Jean and Benoit when they first approach him, though Jean is polite and friendly. James’s attitude is also triggered by the fact that Jean and Benoit are black immigrants, suggesting that people’s attitudes towards strangers are often racially biased.
